I think the issue with Heathrow's 3rd runway is largely down to misfortune. In terms of location, Heathrow is in a terrible position relative to London (due to prevailing winds etc), so there will be noise and safety issues for the surrounding area. Although I can see the commerical benefits from the 3rd runway, I have to take my hat off to HACAN for being so vocal and active in their campagin.
